Alerces Park Fishing Lodge in Patagonia

Alerces Park Fishing Lodge in Patagonia, Argentina is located about two hours from Esquel and four hours from Bariloche, Argentina. Alerces Park has five major lakes, three main rivers and two spring creeks, all with big strong brown and rainbow trout. From one central location our guides will boat to a different place each day. The lodge prepares a great lunch and if the weather is not that great we will come in for lunch. If you are not into wading, we have jet boats that can put you on to the fish. We float the rivers and cast along the lake edges. This can produce a lot of good trout.

Cerro Aconcagua

Cerro Aconcagua (6959m), the highest peak in the Western Hemisphere, lies just within Argentina, some 12 kilometres from the Chilean border. The itinerary is physically strenuous and a great challenge, but is not technically demanding. It is suitable for most adventurous people with a good level of physical fitness, and experience of trekking and camping in remote mountain areas. Our 17-day expedition begins in Mendoza. For Aconcagua, mules are used to transport food and climbing equipment to (and rubbish out from) the Plaza de Mulas base camp. Group members and guides carry a day pack only with their own up and down the mountain. We use a guide:client ratio of approximately 1:3 on Aconcagua, as the better the ratio the higher the chances of summit success for all. Groups ize is a maximum of 12 but is usually around 6 clients and 2 guides. For this programme, experience in the use of crampons and snow-shoes is not a requirement, but previous experience of backpacking and camping in winter conditions would be beneficial.

Museo Fundacional, Mendoza: The Foundational Museum displays what remains of the old city, ravaged by the 1861 earthquake. Chronicling the early history of Mendoza, the museum begins by looking at the culture of the indigenous huarpes and continues with an examination of the city's development through Spanish colonization to independence. An underground chamber holds the ruins of the aqueduct and fountain that once provided Mendoza's water supply.

What is GPS?

The Global Positioning System (GPS) is a satellite-based navigation system made up of a network of 24 satellites placed into orbit by the U.S. Department of Defense. GPS was originally intended for military applications, but in the 1980s, the government made the system available for civilian use. GPS works in any weather conditions, anywhere in the world, 24 hours a day. There are no subscription fees or setup charges to use GPS.
How it works
GPS satellites circle the earth twice a day in a very precise orbit and transmit signal information to earth. GPS receivers take this information and use triangulation to calculate the user's exact location. Essentially, the GPS receiver compares the time a signal was transmitted by a satellite with the time it was received. The time difference tells the GPS receiver how far away the satellite is. Now, with distance measurements from a few more satellites, the receiver can determine the user's position and display it on the unit's electronic map

A GPS receiver must be locked on to the signal of at least three satellites to calculate a 2D position (latitude and longitude) and track movement. With four or more satellites in view, the receiver can determine the user's 3D position (latitude, longitude and altitude). Once the user's position has been determined, the GPS unit can calculate other information, such as speed, bearing, track, trip distance, distance to destination, sunrise and sunset time and more.

Northwest of Argentina

We like to introduce you to the Northwest of Argentina. Few people from outside Argentina consider the possibility to go on a holiday in the Northwest, and the ones who do, usually only visit the touristic places. We will guide you to interesting and magical places in the Northwest, but besides that, we like you to experience something which is very different.
We would like to invite you trekking through an unknown and hidden valley. To a valley with fabulous eroded rock formations and fascinating canyons, with beautiful colours, giant cactusses and above all with a silence, a remoteness and a pureness that is nowadays so difficult to find.
In this desolated region, there are only a few local families who nowadays still try to make a living. We will meet the people of the fincas where we camp, experience their kindness and hospitality, and see how they live. It is maybe hard to imagine for a country as Argentina, but the communication and post here still goes by horse. Maybe some local schools will have a radio, but that is all. You can only come here by horse or on foot. And so we will come here by walking. We walk through valleys and canyons and climb over passes.Your luggage will be carried by a caravan of mules and horses, guided by local gauchos, and you have to carry only the things you need during the day.
This travel is designed to bring us in contact with pure Nature. This travel is for people who like to take a break from the civilised world and reconnect with Mother Earth and themselves. There is no better place then to do that with us and a Loving Group.

Aboriginal furnaces and Jesuit Legacy

Land of Comechingones (aboriginal tribe from Córdoba province) and legends, of thousand-year-old bonfires and aboriginal culture, Córdoba province was the cradle and the home of small independent towns, ruled by a chief, in charge of spreading the native culture and wisdom. Valle de Punilla, Calamuchita, Sierras del Sur, the present Ischilín district and Valle del Suquía or Río Primero were the ideal places to hunt, get relaxed and even to do agrotourism. Amid this scenario of thousand-year-old hills and mythological corners, the aboriginal culture kept their beliefs through the gift of the speech and the art. Caves in Cerro Colorado and other spots in the region were the places chosen to make pictographies, proof of the way in which aboriginal tribes saw the world. The arrival of the Spanish colonization to the lands of Córdoba found tall, thin and bearded men. They lived in semi-underground huts built in pits above ground level. They spoke a language different from most of the northern aboriginal tribes. Sanavirón and its corresponding dialects were the local language in contraposition to the Quechua language, so expanded throughout the rest of Argentina. The European expedition thorough the national territory was started by Francisco de Aguirre by the year 1556, 64 years after the arrival of Christopher Columbus to América. In 1573, Captain Lorenzo Suárez de Figueroa, leaves Jerónimo Luis de Cabrera both the testimony of his expedition through the grounds of Córdoba and a description of the aboriginal peoples. The reason for the expedition of the conquerors of Alto Perú was to find an access road to Río de la Plata; and that was the reason why Mr. Jerónimo Luis founded Córdoba de la Nueva Andalucía by Suquía River on July 6th 1573.After being founded, Córoba was a member of Gobernación del Tucumán (Government of the northern province Tucumán), politically dependant on Chile and then on Virreinato del Perú (Perú Viceroyalty). It was on August 1783 when, urged by the need to separate itself from Río de la Plata Viceroyalty, the city of Córdoba is declared capital of the city council, which by that time ruled the region of San Juan, San Luis and la Rioja. The first Governor Mayor of Córdoba was Marqués de Sobremonte. After having being deprived of their material belongings, the colonists were evangelized in the conquest of the faith; and it was the Jesuits who carried on this evangelization. They, torch-bearers of the ecclesiastical wisdom, built lost of farms in the outskirts of the city and the main temple called Compañía de Jesús in the downtown area of the city of Córdoba. From these farms it was established the cultural, religious, educational and political systems, which ruled the region of Córdoba for hundreds of years and laid the foundations for its growth.Between 1599, year of the arrival of the Jesuitical Order to Argentina to 1767, year in which it was expelled, the province of Córdoba was witness of the arrival of the western faith and its majestic constructions. Both "Camino de las Estancias", and "Manzana Jesuítica" circuits, were declared Patrimony of the Humanity by UNESCO in 2000 because of their historical and political importance. The native peoples, which had suffered the onslaught of the conquerors, were also victims of the European evangelization. It was in fact this conquest which prevented the native culture and language from continuing developing and subsequently caused the disappearance of the aborigines, who became totally extinct with the crossbreeding.

Buenos Aires

Buenos Aires is also called the "Paris of the South" strongly influenced by European culture while retaining Latin charm. It is one of the most sophisticated cities in Latin-America renown for its nightlife and cultural activities. With its countless bars and cafes, bustling streets and nocturnal population, Buenos Aires is a place of infinite movement. It seems hard to find another city in Latin America with so much passion and excitement.
Whether sitting at an outdoor cafe watching the beautiful porteños, dancing Salsa until morning, playing soccer in the parks, or watching a world famous Tango show, cosmopolitan Buenos Aires provides entertainment for everyone. The city is indeed large (three million residents), however it is very walker-friendly and public transportation (metro and buses) offers fast and efficient movement between all of the traditional neighborhoods. Even with the energy supplied by the porteños and the nightlife, Buenos Aires is a remarkably safe city at all hours and students will feel comfortable in our neighborhood. Standards of living are high, and even drinking the local tap water presents no problems. South of Buenos Aires lie many beaches, including the famous resorts of Mar Del Plata (140 km from BA). All of Argentina's tourist locations are easily accessible from Buenos Aires, by economical domestic flights, by rail, and by bus.

Surprisingly Affordable

Until a few years ago, Buenos Aires was one of the world's most expensive cities, but since the peso crashed in 2002, the city has become a bargain. Students at our Spanish school enjoy some of the world's best restaurants and entertainment at a fraction of the former cost.

Access to Argentina's Nature

Buenos Aires is the travel hub of Argentina. Domestic flights can take you north to Iguazzu Falls, south to Patagonia, or west to the Andes mountains. A short ferry ride will get you to Uruguay and its famous beach resort, Punta Del Este.

Music and Shows

Buenos Aires has many cinemas and theatres. The Teatro Colón (Colón Opera House), a monumental coliseum of extraordinary acoustics, hosts international concerts, opera, and ballet. At night you can see tango shows in different places.
